Where & What is Moose Haven Lodge?

Moose Haven is presently a summer seasonal, resourced-based, housekeeping, cottage operation, with a year round home, half-way on the 28 mile (44 km) long Long Lake.

We are approximately 3.5 km north and 10.5 km west of the Village of Charlton, approx. 23 km west of Highway #11 and the Town of Englehart that has a hospital, medical center and public, Catholic & high schools. Ten km west from Highway # 573.

We are at the end of Stoney Lonesome Rd., a fully serviced year round road in the unorganized township of Sharp (see “Benefits of this unorganized township”) with school bus access to our residence. Hydro (electricity) & mail delivery are in place. The property is 146 +/- acres with approximately 1.1 km of shore line

The distance from well-traveled corridors defines and determines Moose Haven to be a destination business.

We offer the traditional tourism experience: family vacations, fishing and hunting, in nature’s living-room.

Moose Haven is licensed through the Ontario Ministry of Tourism as a Resource-Based Tourism operation and as such is eligible through the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry (OMNRF) to participate in the Moose Tag Allocation program ( third largest share holder in WMU 28 with 5 moose tags for 2025) and the Bear Management program (118 sq. km of Crown Land with 15 Form 33’s assigned in 2024). Also through the OMNRF we hold a Tourist Harvester Bait Fish License for two townships

We currently only operate from the 3rd Sat. in May to the end of the 2nd  week of the gun moose hunt, (usually the last week in Oct.). However, the property could be utilized in a 4 season capacity for tourism

Moose Haven was built as a summer seasonal cottage operation and has been in existence for 60 plus years, as near as I can determine. The last 39 years under our guidance.

Moose Haven presently employs three people. Two people full-time seasonally (Carol and me) and one part-time seasonally for cleaning of cottages.

Sales Generation

Sales and incomes are generated from the rental of cottages, rental of boats & motors and the sale of grocery store goods, along with clothing and tackle as well as moose and bear hunting packages. Also the sale of live bait.

Physical Plant: ( A bit of history)

The cottages, as I’ve written, are 60 plus years old, built for the summer season only and are not insulated. They seemed to be well built with what materials were available at the time, a lot of rough lumber and hand hewn floor joists sitting on wooden posts or blocks. Electricity was added at some point. We have run water lines to all, resulting in “cold spring water only” on tap. All water to the cottages & washroom sinks is spring fed well water that is filtered and UV protected and inspected and tested according to the Ministry of Health current guidelines.

There are 10 cottages (9 operating) of various sizes: one – one-room, two – one bedroom, and 6 two bedroom (various bed capacity). All are now supplied with cold spring fed well water on tap, no bath rooms in cottages (central bathrooms & showers).

The store building offers the store area and two shower rooms (his & hers) with 2 flush toilets & 2 shower stalls per side. Hot & cold lake water to the showers & cold lake water to toilets. Potable hot & cold water (filtered & UV‘d well water) to the bathroom sinks.
